Kill the Beast!

In this case, the ‘beast’ is this semester.  So as to my S&S disappearance, I’ve been buried in books, articles, PowerPoint slides and Word documents.  Trying to keep track of 7 classes is no easy feat, and I find myself organizing and reorganizing constantly.

On the upside, I’m really enjoying the course content so much more than last year!  We’re in full medical mode, rather than nursing, and I really enjoy what we’re learning!  I’m not in clinical rotations until the fall, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.

So here’s my fall course line-up:

Pathophysiology (fantastic professor, tough course)
Health Promotion in Pediatrics (interesting content, like our breastfeeding lecture yesterday!)
Primary Care I
Statistics (this course makes me want to cry — it’s so dry and actually causes me physical pain, but our professor is sweet)
Physical Assessment (so much to learn, but so interesting — this is why I’m here!)
Assessment Lab (love this class – it’s practicing physical and history on each other – so much to learn!)
Research Methods (shoot me now)

I was so lucky that I was able to waive out of child development, so I’m one class down for the semester.  I hear it’s a terribly boring course, with a ton of reading. Towards the end of the semester we have a very short class that involves newborn assessments in the hospital – very excited for that one, although nervous, too — there’s a lot to know!

Besides school, Kurt is working insane hours down in NYC Monday-Friday, which bums me out constantly, but does give me a lot of time to get class stuff done during the week. Our weekends have become more fun than ever, with the focus being on just the two of us, with lots of eating and drinking involved. :)   We’ve been working on wedding plans a bit, which is fun but a lot to figure out!  Also, Kurt bought a guitar and is teaching himself how to play.  I actually quite love hearing him play, and like Kurt with most things, he’s immediately good at it.

Ok friends, that’s all for now!  I’ll be better about updating more often, and hope you are checking out Dreamy Dish once in awhile, too! xoxo

Drumroll Please! . . . We’re Engaged!

Ok, so this isn’t probably news to you, but I of course had to officially post our engagement to S&S!  Kurt proposed to me on Thursday night on Martha’s Vineyard, at the Edgartown Lighthouse.  It was perfect, and sweet, and well, just very us.

Here we are just moments after I said YES!
Officially affianced!

Summer Break!

Well now, does 5 weeks actually qualify as “summer break”?  All you working folks are going to kill me for asking the question!

It’s been so nice to have time off . . . I’m actually remembering what it feels like to be human again, sans the feeling that a gun is to my head all the time!  While I know that “gun to the head” feeling is right around the corner, I’m relishing in my free time.

We’ve certainly made the most of my time off so far!  Kurt gets 5 weeks of vacation a year, and he’s committed to take each and every day!  We left days after my semester ended for a trip to good ole’ San Diego!  My friend was getting married, my nephew was growing bigger, and I missed my family and friends.  Plus, we’re desperately tired of New Haven, so returning to my little bubble seemed like just the right respite!

We started with a family dinner on our first night in town, but guess who was the only family member to actually get a photo?  That’s right, the sweetest little man, ever!

Logan

The next night we celebrated my friend Kari’s birthday at a new restaurant called Urban Solace.  The food was great — homestyle-ish, but not diner-like.  I haven’t felt that full in awhile, and I’m sure it had something to do with the side of mac & cheese that I thought was a totally brilliant idea.

Jenn & Kari

I love the outside of the restaurant – so charming! Here we are, in front of it:

Us

Most of the time in San Diego, we just spend lollygagging around.  We did find some time to look around at neighborhoods that we both liked, should we move back when school is finished.  We agreed on Little Italy, Downtown, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and San Elijo Hills (which has the most amazing homes that we could actually afford!).  It was fun to look around and dream of owning our own place.  We’re so over apartment living!

We attended the wedding of my good friend Ryan, who married the sweetest girl, Katie!  Forgetting my invitation at home in New Haven, there was a little miscommunication about the start of the ceremony time, and alas, we didn’t make it!  My goodness, talk about a very un-Jenn-like move!  Eh, what can you do . . . we made the best part – the party!!

They both looked gorgeous, and I was so glad to see them on their most special day!

We ended the week with a pool side BBQ, where we had the best time! My dad and step-mom, Bettye, came down to San Diego to join us, and it was so relaxing and fun!

Getting back from San Diego, we had a few days to get ourselves together, and then we were off to DC to pick up Kristin & Brian, en route to Pinehurst, NC.  Fortunately, we were smart enough to drive down to K&B’s on Wednesday and stay the night, otherwise it would have been brutal!  When we got into DC, Kristin gave us a tour of the Pentagon, which was super cool.  She’s an excellent tour guide, and had all these interesting facts about the Pentagon.  But let’s get right to it . . . I am now your leader! Haha, wouldn’t that be totally scary?!

Commander-in-Chief, Jenn!

Our first night in Pinehurst we had a lovely dinner at the Carolina Room, where we had the funniest server who kept giving Kurt’s dad a hard time.  I’m not sure that Kurt’s mom found this hilarious, but the rest of us did.

Later at the bar, me and Kurt:

The next day the guys had a round of golf, and Kristin and I made our way to a Starbucks in the next town over, which just happened to have a great TJ Maxx!  We scored ourselves a few deals, and then drove back to the Village to have lunch with the guys.  We had lunch at a great little Greek restaurant with the nicest server in the world.  I swear, the people in Pinehurst are just so nice!

K&B, enjoying a Greek coffee:

Then Kristin and I browsed the boutiques, and I had to snap this photo of the guys in their rocking chairs:
Kurt and Brian

That night, we had some seriously good sushi at Ten-Ya.  I know, good sushi in Pinehurst, NC?!  No seriously, very impressive.  The waitress was extremely funny though, not knowing some very basic words at a sushi restaurant.  When she brought the gyoza, she wanted to call them ‘geishas’.  With her little southern accent, it was quite funny.  She kept us laughing throughout dinner in fact.

The next day the guys golfed Pinehurst, and then the girls went to the spa where I had a massage with hot stones that I thoroughly enjoyed!  I always thought the hot stone massage thing was rather gimmicky, but no, no!  Loved it! Before our spa appointments, we had lunch at the club, and then took a group photo, being the dorks that we are:

The Group

It was really great spending time with Kurt’s sister and brother-in-law, Chris, as well as Kurt’s nieces Riley and Logan.  The girls are so big since the last time we saw them!  They are both so sweet and funny, and we look forward to hopefully seeing them again soon.

Our last evening ended with a BBQ, and lots of drinking over games of pool in Kurt’s room.  Here’s Kristin, looking quite sassy in Kurt’s glasses!

Sassy Kristin

Well that’s it, friends!  Just a couple more weeks of relaxation, and the the madness begins again!  Kurt and I are escaping to Martha’s Vineyard next week, and we’re both very excited to check out the island!  Sadly, he’s on a project in NYC Monday-Friday, so I’m only going to be seeing him on the weekends for at least 4 months. Sniffle-sniffle!! :( We’ll have to plan lots of weekend getaways to make up for it!

Hope you are enjoying your summers too, and hope to see you soon!  xoxo

and that’s all folks + milestone!

Well there you have it — my “GEPN” year is done!  It’s just starting to sink in . . . at first it was a bit anti-climatic, and then the excitement slowly started to creep in while setting up for a celebratory BBQ last night.  The BBQ was a great success, followed by drinks at a local bar.  Today, I’m exhausted.  I think my body is finally allowing itself to relax, and I swear, I could just nap all day! I really can’t believe how quickly the year has gone by, and while the madness starts up again in the fall, it’s going to be different since I’ll be getting into NP stuff, and a lot more interested in the content!

It’s going to be so great to have the next 5 weeks off — reading for pleasure, taking naps, cooking up a storm — ahh!

Here are a few photos from last night’s celebration!

Check out this *amazing* cake that my friends Kait and Katie made — truly impressive!

We drank, we danced and we blew off a lot of steam!  I thank all my friends for a terrific night and I wish you a fabulous and relaxing 5 weeks of summer!

In complete coincidence, this is my 100th Scrubs and Skillets post!  It seems very fitting to end my GEPN year with post #100!

Thanks for all the support and encouragement over the last year — I couldn’t have done it without you!!

Well, Hello Nature!

As promised, I have proof that I went for a real gosh darn hike!

But first, here’s a few additional non-hiking photos from our weekend in the country . . .

Here I am, enjoying a lovely Malbec in their beautiful screened-in porch:

So there you have it, folks.  It was rugged, rocky and steep at times, and I did it!  Geez, have you ever heard of someone be so very proud of themselves?  Amazingly, I didn’t injure myself, but I did have 3 pretty nasty bug bites, including one next to my eye!  Mosquitoes beware – I’m coming for you!

I leave you with our best photo ever:

Home Stretch

As I approach the end of my first year, I find myself exhausted!  Just 6 clinical days to go, and I couldn’t be more excited!  Just three days after I finish my first year, we get on a plane from NYC –> SAN, and nothing makes me happier!  Kurt and I have both been working hard lately — me finishing up the program and Kurt laboring over a project that keeps him in NYC most of the week.  We were both so exhausted that we couldn’t even make proper 4th of July plans, but we were both quite thankful for a relaxed night down on the Long Island Shore, eating food and watching fireworks.

A photo of the shore, before sundown:

And in other news, my darling friend Amanda turned 40 last week, and much celebration was in order! We started with a birthday dinner in New Haven with her sweet boyfriend, Ed, and some of our fabulous nursing school friends.

Well here we are, being all cute and looking like sisters with our ginger hair!

The next night, Amanda’s actual birthday, we went to a new place called Kitchen Zinc for a couple mojitos, before dinner at my place!  Here we are, self-portrait-ing:
Jenn and Amanda

Seeing as New Haven really wears on us after awhile, and seeing as we hadn’t nearly celebrated Amanda’s birthday enough, Kurt and I drove up to Otis, MA on Saturday for a night at Amanda and Ed’s place!  They live in the country (seriously!).  It’s so beautiful, literally in the Berkshires, and just the sort of R&R we needed.  Despite it being her birthday celebration, she and Ed took wonderful care of us, and we had a brilliant time!  My only contribution was a lemon-cornmeal cake, but it was damn good if I do say so myself!

After a delicious glass of red wine upon arrival, and a slice of lemon cake for a bit of energy, we jumped in their car and headed to Northampton, home of Smith College, which was amazing!  How did I not know about all these fabulous northeast liberal arts colleges when I was younger?!  We had a walk through Smith’s Botanic Garden, which was just lovely:

Smith's Botanic Garden

Smith's Botanic Garden

After Smith, we walked around Northampton, where I think I said, no less than 40 times, “Why isn’t Yale located in Northampton?!”.  It’s really adorable, and quintessential New England!  After walking around a bit, we went to a great Indian restaurant for dinner, which completely hit the spot.  They even had Artesa on the wine menu (our favorite!), which we promptly ordered.  After dinner we went to Tunnel Bar, literally built in an old tunnel!  It was super fun, and the perfect place to be as the storm rolled into town!

Amanda and Ed, in the tunnel!
Ed and Amanda

We got back and went to bed, and the craziest storm came through Otis!  Seriously, I can say with 100% assurance that I had never experienced this kind of storm before!  Amanda and Ed literally live in the forest (so Kurt would call it the “woods” but I disagree, it’s forest!), and as we were staying on the second floor, so it was like being up in a tree fort during a storm.  The most amazing bursts of thunder and lightening were right over us, and everything was so loud–the rain, the thunder–it was seriously cool!  Kurt and I just laid there in bed watching it, and of course I kept going “whoa”, “omg!”, “huh!” – spectacular!

Now, clearly I didn’t get a photo during the storm, but here’s a picture from the guest room window looking out (all trees!), so you can imagine what it might have been like in a storm (ok so I’m silly, but my CA friends might appreciate this!):
view from Amanda's guest room

We really had the best time with them, with all the crickets, frogs (ok frog, singular — Kurt said he wasn’t a normal frog but whatever), trees, good friends and clean air!  Oh, and can you believe they got me on a serious, and I do mean serious (!), hike the next day?  People, it was the real deal!  Photos about hiking, nature, good friends and mosquito bites to come!

Happy 4th of July!!

For those of you who have ever watched fireworks with me, you know I get super excited!!  I love all the colors, noise, excitement . . . I’m seriously like a kid!  I can’t wait for the show tonight, and hope you can’t either!!

Last year for the 4th, we were in Lake Tahoe with Christina!  She laughed at me the whole time during the fireworks show. ;)   Isn’t this a crazy photo?

Hope you are doing something fun, including a fireworks show!  Think of me while the colors and noise explode before your eyes!  YAY!

BBQ fun + Community Health Nursing

We officially had our last exam of our first year on Tuesday, and what a relief!  My fellow classmate, Allison, hosted a BBQ at her adorable house to celebrate (and I didn’t even snap a photo with her — oops)!  It was just what I needed to blow off a little steam with Kurt and my lovely friends!

Ok, so home health nursing (aka community health nursing).  In three words: NOT FOR ME.

We’ll see how it progresses, but this is going to be the longest 3 weeks of my life.  My preceptor does not find me amusing one bit, and to that I say, “Ditto, lady!”.

You can bet your sweet bum there will be stories — stay tuned!

Maternal-Newborn: DONE! Girls’ Dinner to Celebrate!

Wow, second to last rotation down, one to go!  I really can’t believe that I’m almost done with my “GEPN” year, which is basically our “RN” year.  I didn’t learn until recently that our program to become an RN is the most accelerated program in the country!  Geez, good thing I didn’t know that sooner . . . somehow I think that might have messed with my psyche.  Thinking that this was just a normal accelerated program made me get on with it, LOL.

At any rate, I have one little rotation to go, although it’s a beast!  I’ve been in our community health course for a few weeks, maybe a month now?  Who knows, the days are flying by at a rapid pace.  Now that I’ve finished both the course and clinical for maternal-newborn, I just need to finish up the community health course (my paper is due Monday, and our final is Tuesday), and then I began the torturous rotation.  It’s basically going to be “home health”, which is SO NOT MY THING.  It’s Monday-Friday for 3 very long weeks, but at least I get it over with quickly!  Not only is it home health, but it’s home health in New Haven.  Uh-hmm, could be interesting . . .  I’m trying to have a positive attitude–perhaps I’ll get to help a really cute old lady, or a mom who just had twins–but it’s not looking good, people.  From past stories, I’m bracing for the worst!  I had so hoped that “community health” meant “community clinic”–that would have been my thing– but alas, no such luck.  Ah, well.

On our last day of maternal-newborn rotations, while waiting to be called in for our evaluations, Kait practiced her mad wheelchair skills:

Kait

I couldn’t be more excited about having the month of August off to de-stress, recoup and relax.  We’re headed to San Diego just two days after I finish community health.  We’re going to hang out in the glorious weather, spend time with my family, including my amazing little nephew, attend one of my oldest friend’s weddings, and maybe get my nephew christened, too!

When we get back from San Diego we’ll be at home for a week, and then we’re off to Pinehurst with Kristin and Brian to visit Kurt’s parents, spend time at the ole’ country club, do a little golf and spa day, and just generally hang out and relax.  I know it will be a great time, and we are looking forward to seeing Kurt’s family, including his sister and brother-in-law and Kurt’s two nieces, who just moved back from London to DC!  We also really look forward to showing K&B around Pinehurst!

After those two trips, I fully intend to get organized around the apartment, make a ton of new recipes for Dreamy Dish, and do some yoga already.  This girl needs to de-stress!!

Friday night I had some friends over for a girls’ dinner (Kurt was in NYC for a work thing), and it was so needed!  My friends Katie, Mo and Kait are the best!  I’m so lucky that both Katie and Kait are in the family nurse practitioner program with me, so now all I need to do is to get Mo to switch out of oncology to be with us and it will be perfect! ;)

Here’s a photo of my lovely friends at the start of dinner:
Katie, Kait and Mo

After a kir royale, a machê salad with warmed brie and honey, turkey sausage lasagna, a delicious red wine, and Katie’s fabulous strawberry and rhubarb pie AND chocolate dipped strawberries, I was absurdly full and happy.  Katie, become a pastry chef!

I had told Kait about my favorite children’s book, “Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type” one day, and followed it with the author’s other book, “Giggle, Giggle, Quack, Ducks that ???”  I forgot what the ducks did!  It turns out they just annoy the farmer, but so we had to bust them out after dinner (does Jenn Corum know how to party, or what?!).

I’m so lucky to have people in my life that keep me sane.  I’m indebted to all of you, both here in New Haven, and around the country.

xoxo, Jenn
